I was reading a book late last night, and I thought it summed up quite nicely what I want to do/be.
The first chapter is about dreaming. No, not the ones you have when you go to sleep. But, rather, those outlandish goals or idea you had when you were a kid. Like becoming a superhero who save the world. It asks one simple question: "What happened to those dreams, and why don't we still dream? Especially as Christians." I think this is an awesome way to start an amazing book! For one it challenges the modern Christian life style. These day a good Christian will have a dependable job, a nice house, and a retirement fund. In the book it calls this "dreaming": Passion to achieve the impossible. So, What turned us from wanting to achieve the impossible, to playing it safe? When our little-kid passion for the impossible dies, everything worth living for goes with it. Of course there will always be those that argue its for the best. After all, if you never aim high, you'll never be disappointed with mediocrity. I you were to go out in the world declaring you were going to live an impossible life, more then likely you would be immediately ridiculed and pushed away. So then, why even try for the impossible? Especially when you could live safely so easily. Well I would have to say that according to history, God uses the people who desire to do the impossible. Look at recent or ancient history and you will see. The people who stand out the most are the one who lived an impossible dream. But wait, I thought it was impossible?... Might I say it's only impossible if you don't live it. Here is a quote from the book: "Modern Christians have focussed so much on God's loving us in our weakness that we seem to have forgotten that He wants to build each of us into walking, talking, world-changing demonstrations of his amazing grace." "God designed us to become the modern-day heroes who are devoted, courageous, fearless, immoveable, and marked with uncompromised integrity."
Wow! Does that ever get me fired up! I had almost given up completely on my impossible dreams. But now I know it can be done! even just rereading this makes me hyped up and super excited about the life God has for me! Dreams CAN come true! You just have to live them! Less trying and more letting.
It's that last phrase I want to focus on now. "less trying and more letting." Less of you trying to do Gods part in you life, and more letting God control your life. Understanding this principle has helped me dramatically in changing my life. God wants you to do the very best you can, nothing more. He will take care of everything else. The Bible makes it very clear God will never ask or give us anything we can not handle.
Pitching Tents. This is what most Christians do today. I've already touched on this subject, but I want to go a little deeper. What does pitching tents have to do with Christianity? Well, as Christians for some reason we seem to think that we can achieve a certain level of knowledge or understanding of God and the Bible, and thats all we need. But, doing that, is like learning the basics of a sport and thinking you are a master! Most of us Christians will live our lives without ever knowing that Life is meant to be a boundless adventure beyond our wildest dreams. In the book I'm reading it goes something like this: "Stoping at the basics is like taking one step into an endless field, and saying we have made it to the end. And continuing to walk in the endless field isn't just any kind of living. It's Christ-enabled living. Impossible living."
